Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers solve problems in the environment through applying the principles of biology and chemistry to their work. Their work involves the control of water and air pollution, recycling, waste disposal, and solving public health issues. They conduct studies on hazardous-waste management and advise on methods for treatment. They develop environmental regulations, design municipal water supplies, water treatment plants, and perform quality-control checks. Some work as consultants who advise clients on meeting regulations.

The average starting salary for an environmental engineer with a Bachelor's Degree is $51,000.

The average annual salary for an experienced environmental engineer is $80,750.

In 2008, approximately 54,300 people were environmental engineers. This is the 8th largest discipline in the U.S. It is one of the medium-range disciplines in number of engineers in the field.

Electrical Engineering is expected to grow by 31% in employment in the 2008-2018 decade. Job opportunities should be good because of the demand for environmental engineers to help companies meet environmental regulations; to develop new methods to clean up, prevent, and eliminate environmental problems; and to find new ways to create healthier societies.

The top environmental schools are Stanford University, University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
