Biomedical engineers develop products such as artificial organs, prostheses, medical instruments, medical information systems, and health management and care delivery systems. Biomedical engineers work to solve medical and health-related problems with new medical devices and procedures. They must combine their knowledge of engineering, biology, and medicine.

The starting annual salary for an engineer entering this field with a Bachelor's Dgree is $54,158.

The average annual salary for an engineer in this discipline is $82,550.

As of 2008, approximately 16,000 people were biomedical engineers. This is the 4th smallest discipline.

Biomedical engineers should experience the fastest growth of the disciplines over the next decade. Employment growth in biomedical engineering is projected to grow 72% between 2008 and 2018, the highest of all disciplines. This is because of growing interest in this field, a higher demand for better medical devices/equipment, and a growing focus on health-related issues. Employment for all disciplines of engineering is expected to grow 7-13% over the next decade. Job openings compared with job seekers are expected to be balanced in all areas of engineering.

The top three schools for biomedical engineering are Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of California-San Diego.
